At About The Dog, we believe that great grooming goes far beyond looks. It’s about comfort, health, confidence, and happiness. Whether you’re preparing for your first grooming visit or looking to elevate your dog’s care routine, this guide has you covered.
Why Regular Grooming Matters for Your Dog
Grooming isn’t just a beauty treatment, it’s a vital part of your dog’s health and wellbeing. Here’s why:
Healthy Skin & Coat: Regular brushing spreads natural oils from root to tip, helping keep the coat shiny and reducing tangles and matting.
Comfort & Mobility: Long nails can change the way a dog walks and cause discomfort. All our full grooms include nail clipping free of charge or you can get it for half price with any wash and go or wash, blow and glow.
Hygiene: Clean ears and trimmed fur in sensitive areas help prevent infections and keep your dog feeling fresh.
At About The Dog, we focus on gentle care and tailored grooming because every breed and personality is different.
When to Book Your Dog’s Full Grooming Session
There’s no one-size-fits-all schedule, but here are general guidelines to help you book ahead:
Long-coated breeds (like Spaniels, Poodles, and Shih Tzus): aim for every 4 to 6 weeks.
Short-coated breeds (like Beagles and Labradors): typically every 6 to 8 weeks.
Double-coated breeds (like Huskies and Samoyeds): usually every 8 to 12 weeks
What to Expect During Your Grooming Appointment
Grooming is a delicate process that usually takes between an hour and a half to two hours for longer hair breeds, up to an hour for short haired breeds and sometimes slightly longer for very large breeds like Bernese Mountain Dogs
Warm Bath with Specialised Shampoos
Every bath uses a shampoo selected for your dog’s specific coat and skin needs.
Gentle Drying & Brushing
We blow out and brush all loose hair to help with matting and prepare the coat for cutting or clipping.
Trimming & Styling
From tidy trims to full breed-specific cuts, you can specify how you’d like your pooch to be groomed when you bring them in.
Nail & Ear Care
Careful nail trimming and ear cleaning help keep your dog comfortable and healthy.
Extra Pampering (Optional)
Ask about add-ons like teeth brushing, paw balms or spa packages.
Tips for At-Home Care Between Visits
To keep your pup looking and feeling great between appointments:
Brush regularly to reduce mats and tangles.
Check ears and paws weekly for debris or irritation.
Trim nails as needed — a quick clip here and there can save stress later.
Reward your dog with praise or treats after grooming sessions to build a positive association.
When Your Dog Acts “Different” After Grooming
It’s totally normal for some dogs to act a bit strange after grooming especially if it’s a new experience. Just like people, dogs might feel a little self-conscious or unsure of their fresh look. Give them time, cuddle them up, and reassure them they’re still their wonderful selves.
If you notice any signs of irritation or discomfort, let us know at info@aboutthedog.co.uk and we will be happy to help.
